Math
Our math program at PCES is based on the Georgia Mathematics Performance Standards (GPS). We use the Houghton Mifflin Math - Georgia textbooks as well as numerous manipulatives and supplemental materials. One main focus for math this school year has been problem solving and strategies.
Georgia Mathematics Frameworks
A specific technique that is used with our math program is "modeling". Modeling is presented and taught by manipulative use. Examples of these manipulatives would be: wipe-off mats, rulers, protractors, base ten blocks, Cuisenaire rods, pattern blocks, tangrams, etc.
Part of our math instruction comes from Successmaker - Math Concepts and Skills 2 managed software in our 2nd computer lab. This is a knowledge-based interactive multimedia course designed to develop and maintain mathematical skills. The instruction combines individualized practice in math and problem-solving skills. Each session is tailored to fit the students' state of knowledge, acquisition rate, and retention.
We also host our school Math Bowl for fourth and fifth grade students. These students are selected to participate in a problem solving competition. The winning team will join teams from other elementary schools at at county level math tournament in May.
