Scholastic Reading Counts!
Scholastic Reading Counts! is a reading incentive program. Students earn credit for the books that they read after taking a 5 - 10 question comprehension test on the computer. See your child's teacher for more information on the way Reading Counts! will be implemented in each individual classroom.
The PCES Media Center has over 16,000 books in our collection. Roughly 90% of the chapter books and pictures books have a Reading Counts quiz available. The nonfiction section has a smaller selection of quizzes; however, that number is growing each month as we receive a new download of quizzes from Scholastic. The public libraries also support Reading Counts! and can help you locate books within your child's reading level. If you and your child read a book at home that is not available in our school library, you may check to see if a quiz is available at the Scholastic Reading Counts! website. Note: If the book has been newly added to Reading Counts! it may take up to a month for it to appear in our list at school.
Another
part of our reading program is SRI - Scholastic Reading Inventory. This is a computerized test that all 2nd - 5th grade students take to determine their reading ability. The SRI test involves reading a series of short passages taken from fiction and nonfiction books and articles. After each passage, the student is asked to complete a fill-in-the-blank sentence. The test is taken on a computer, and lasts about 20 minutes. Students will take this test three times per year to monitor progress. Test results are reported using a readability measurement called the Lexile. The Lexile score can be used to assess the student's reading ability as well as to recommend books at an appropriate reading level.
Visit Lexile.com for more information on Lexile scores and ranges.
